Reference solutions: optimisation application examples

Analysis and optimisation of algorithms on embedded systems for the automobile research with real-time stereo-image processing

The research department of a well-known German car manufacturer is developing highly complex image-processing algorithms for new driver assistance and safety systems. A specific example is the dense and exact calculation of the 3-dimensional structure in front of the vehicle using the video-images of two cameras. This information will allow future cars to evaluate their immediate environment and determine, as well as predict, the position of other vehicles, obstacles and pedestrians.

The SCS-Vision experts were asked to find out the suitability of these highly complex algorithms for automotive qualified FPGA. The processing power of the selected and optimised FPGA solution surpassed the PC by a factor of 50.

The SCS-Vision team demonstrated the feasibility of the algorithms for future cars. As a Third Party of Analog Devices, Texas Instruments and Xilinx, SCS-Vision has established itself as the expert in DSP and FPGA solutions.

Photographic platform for automobile research with real-time evaluation of 660 megapixels / second

ferag

The research department of a well-known German car manufacturer wanted a device for precise measurement of moving car wheels. The device had to be capable of detecting the wheel position to within a tenth of a millimeter, to optimise wheel arches, shock absorbers and ABS systems, for example. Using photographic algorithms, up to 250 positioning marks applied to the wheel and bodywork had to be evaluated in real-time in each picture.

SCS-Vision developed a computer platform with an FPGA (Virtex II Pro) and an Ethernet interface to a laptop. The high-speed camera, which provides 500 pictures/sec at HDTV resolution, is connected via a CameraLink interface. As a result, 660 megapixels can be evaluated online.

The platform was designed, developed and tested within four months. Since the prototype was already fully operable, no redesign was needed.
